Attendance Policies

                                          ATTENDANCE - Every Minute Counts!
Positive Attendance is a major factor in students being successful in school.
To date, Orange Elementary students have a total of 2023 absences which
equates to a loss of 728,280 instructional minutes.  Students have also had
1205 tardies this year.

                                                        ARE YOU AWARE?
-Students with regular school attendance tend to have higher achievement
in school and a greater probability of success in college.
-Students who are not tardy and who have regular attendance tend to have
better relationships with their peers and with staff members.
-Students averaging 15 days of absences a year will miss a year of
  instruction by the 12th grade.
-Students who are habitually tardy are developing habits that may last for a
lifetime.  There is an absolute relationship between students who drop out of
school and attendance problems during the elementary or middle school years.

EDUCATION AND IN THE WORK FORCE.

A focus for us at Orange this year is to improve student attendance and tardies and we want to ensure that all students come to school everyday and on time.

State law requires regular attendance. Illness or medical appointments are the only legally excused absences.
If your child is absent or going to be absent, please call the school at 736-3455. Our answering machine is on from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. to help you call in your child's absences at your convenience. Your call saves our clerk from calling you.

Students going out of town or on vacation are to be marked as truant under the "Every Student Succeeds Act" federal law.  Parents are strongly encouraged to request and have their child do the assignments given under an Independent Study.  (Independent Studies are only available from periods of 5 to 10 days.)  Requests for an Independent Study must be made at least five (5) school days prior to the child leaving.  Credit for the missed school days is only permissible after assigned work has been turned in by the deadline.  A truant indicates a violation of the laws requiring children be at school every day their track is in session.

Our school district is required under ESSA to monitor student attendance, notify parents of excessive absences, tardies, and truants, and to follow prescribed procedures (School Attendance Review Team, School Attendance Review Board, referral to Riverside District Attorney's office) regarding attendance.

The following will hopefully aid in understanding parental responsibilities under the law.

Students are to arrive on time and remain in school for the duration of the school day.  If a child arrives late, this is recorded as a tardy.  If the tardy is for a medical/dental appointment, the school office needs to be notified by the student’s parent for proper coding. Our school is mandated to send letters at threshold points regarding tardies.

The gates (Lunch Court and Morning Glory) will shut when the bell stops ringing at 7:45am.  Students who arrive after this time will be given a tardy slip at the gate and sent to class, or directed to the office to get a tardy slip.  This policy was implemented and took effect on August 17, 2016.

Illness (Excused)

A note or phone call to the office reporting an illness must be received from the parent.  If not cleared the child will be marked truant.  Orally telling your child’s teacher does not qualify.

Independent Study (Excused)
While not the best situation, parents may, at times, need to take their child(ren) out of school.  An Independent Study form needs to be requested by parents two-weeks prior to the child being absent and approved by teacher and administration.  This provides the teacher ample time to gather the necessary items, write up the assignments, and obtain necessary signatures.  The Independent Study is valid for absences that consist of at least 5 consecutive school days. Credit is earned based upon assignments completed, whether turned in on time, and the quality of those assignments.  School days of attendance are given based upon the credit earned.

Our school and district continues to notify parents of excessive absences, tardies, and truants, and will follow prescribed procedures regarding attendance.

We appreciate your support as we work to improve student attendance at Orange Elementary.  Let us know how we can best support you and your children so that they can show up for school on time every day.   We want your child to be successful in school!  If you have any questions or need more information please contact us.
